Working from Home? Here’s How to Lock Down Your Digital Life

By 6th August 2025No Comments

Remote work is here to stay — whether it’s a full-time setup or just a few days a week. But as more teams work from home, cybersecurity risks grow, especially for small businesses without big IT departments.

If your team is logging in from home offices, coffee shops, or the back seat of an Uber, it’s time to tighten up security. Here’s how to protect your business, your data, and your people.

1. Secure the Wi-Fi

Home Wi-Fi networks aren’t always secure — and unlike an office network, you’re not in control.

Make sure your team:

  • Changes the default router password
  • Uses a strong Wi-Fi password
  • Updates the router firmware regularly
  • Avoids connecting to unknown or open networks

2. Use a VPN

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) encrypts internet traffic, especially important when connecting to company systems or cloud platforms. A good VPN makes it much harder for attackers to intercept data, even on public Wi-Fi.

3. Keep Devices Updated

Outdated devices are vulnerable devices. Ensure all work-related laptops, desktops, and smartphones have:

  • Automatic updates turned on
  • Current antivirus software
  • Firewalls enabled

Encourage employees to restart devices regularly so updates can complete.

4. Separate Work and Personal Use

Mixing work tools with personal apps, streaming platforms, or gaming software increases risk.

Where possible:

  • Use a dedicated work device
  • Avoid installing unnecessary software
  • Restrict shared access (e.g., don’t let kids play on your work laptop)

5. Enforce Strong Passwords and 2FA

Remote work often involves cloud platforms like Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, or accounting systems. Make sure your team uses:

  • Strong, unique passwords for every account
  • A password manager to keep them safe
  • Two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever possible

6. Back Up Everything

Laptops get stolen. Files get deleted. Ransomware happens.

Set up automated, cloud-based backups for all essential files — and test them regularly to ensure they actually work.

7. Provide Clear IT Support

Even with the best security in place, people will make mistakes. Make sure your remote team knows:

  • Who to contact if something goes wrong
  • What to do if they think they’ve been hacked
  • How to report phishing or suspicious behaviour
