IT Horror Stories: 5 Tech Nightmares That Haunt Our Nerds

By 26th October 2026No Comments

It’s Halloween, which means pumpkins, costumes and the occasional skeleton in the garden.

At Dial a Nerd, we don’t scare easily. We’ve spent 28 years staring into the depths of broken laptops, haunted printers and servers making noises no machine should make.

But some things still make our Nerds sleep with the lights on. Here are seven real IT horrors we see at home, at school and at work and how to make sure they never happen to you.

At home

1. The Password That Would Not Die

The scene: It’s the same password for email, banking and the streaming service. It has been since 2014. Possibly it’s the dog’s name followed by “123”. Or your first born with your birth date.

Why it’s scary: If one account is breached, criminals try that password everywhere else. One leak can unlock your whole digital life.

How to banish it: Use a password manager, switch to long passphrases and turn on multi-factor authentication. There is no spoon, and there’s no “safe” password you can reuse everywhere.

At school

2. The Laptop Graveyard

The scene: First day of term. Thirty devices, untouched since December. Flat batteries, missed updates and one mysteriously sticky keyboard.

Why it’s scary: Teachers lose precious lesson time, and outdated devices are an easy target for security threats.

How to banish it: Plan a pre-term check: charge, update, test and back up. Better still, have a Nerd look after it so teachers can get on with teaching.

3. The Wi-Fi That Vanishes

The scene: The connection is fine in the staffroom, but the moment 30 learners log on for an online test, it disappears.

Why it’s scary: It’s chaos for everyone, and a school network that’s under strain can also be a vulnerable one.

How to banish it: A proper network assessment. Good school Wi-Fi is designed for crowds, not just signal strength.

At work

4. The Backup That Was Never Tested

The scene: “Don’t worry, we back everything up.” The server fails. Everyone turns to the backup. The backup turns out to be… from March 2012.

Why it’s scary: A backup you’ve never restored is just a hope. When it fails, so does your sanity.

How to banish it: Test your restores regularly and make sure someone is responsible for checking them. Ask yourself honestly: if we lost everything what would the financial damage be?

5. The Server in the Kitchen Cupboard

The scene: The beating heart of the business sits next to the kettle, under a stack of takeaway menus, plugged into an extension cord of questionable origin.

Why it’s scary: Heat, dust, spilled tea and no backup power are a horror film waiting to happen, and load-shedding makes it worse.

How to banish it: Give critical equipment a proper, ventilated home with backup power. Or move to the cloud and evict the monster completely.

The happy ending

Every one of these nightmares has a happy ending and usually a simple one. Most IT horror stories aren’t caused by cutting-edge hackers. They come from small things left for “later.”

The good news is that you don’t have to fight the monsters alone. Whether it’s your family’s devices, your school’s network or your business’s servers, our Nerds have seen it all. We even fixed the printer that was possessed. Allegedly.

Happy Halloween from all the Nerds at Dial a Nerd.
